Weather Trader Morning Update
The Lower 48 east of the Rockies is still frigid under the effects of the first Arctic blast. The coldest actual temperatures and relative to normal are in Tennessee over the fresh snow cover allowing clear skies to plummet the mercury. Nashville dipped to 0°F as of 6 AM ET which is about 30-35°F below normal for early morning on January 17.
Overall, the Lower 48 is almost 11°F below normal, somewhat better than the -17°F from the previous 2 mornings. Amusing to note that Maine has largely escaped the worst aspects of this Arctic blast — relative to typical mid-January temperatures — it’s still cold.
High Temperatures Today | Wednesday January 17, 2024
Improvement! While it’s still chilly across much of the Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast, the worst of the frigid Arctic air has moderated — for now. Another reinforcing shot of Canadian Arctic air is on the way for this weekend. Compared to normal for mid-January, looks like 15°F below average highs from Texas to NYC — seasonably cold.
Western U.S. storms continue with quick Clipper System through Mid-Atlantic
Behind the weak low pressure system that slides off the mid-Atlantic coast on Saturday, very cold high pressure builds over the Lower 48 centered on Missouri in the 1040s mb. This would be a serious bout of Arctic air had we not just had the current blast — so less worse.
